 英国軍との戦いで捕らえられ死刑を待つスコットランド兵士が、故郷と恋人を思う歌との説があります。「low road」とは、自分が向かう死者の道で、生き延びて地上を帰る仲間より、霊魂となった自分の方がｽｺｯﾄﾗﾝﾄﾞへは先に着くという意味。ケルト文化には、「故郷から離れた土地で亡くなった者には、妖精が魂を地下道で故郷まで案内する」という信仰があるという。スコットランド人にとっては第二の国歌であるようです。
