二人はよく船で旅をした

with billowed sail　 　

帆を張って

Jackie kept a lookout

perched on puff’s gigantic tail.　

パフの巨大な尾の上に止まって

Noble kings and princes would bow

高貴な王様や王子達はお辞儀をした

whenever they came.

二人が来る度に

Pirate ships would lower their flag 　

海賊船は旗を下げたものだった

when puff roared out his name.

パフが自分の名前を唸りをあげて叫ぶと

A dragon lives forever but not so little boys.

竜は不老不死だけど少年はそうじゃない

Painted wings and giant rings　

塗った翼も大きな輪も、

make way for other toys.　

他のオモチャに道を譲った

One grey night it happened,

Jackie paper came no more　

ジャッキー・ペイパーはもう来なくなった

and puff that mighty dragon, 　

あの強いドラゴンのパフは

he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow, 　

パフは悲しみでうなだれ

green scales fell like rain　　

緑の鱗は雨のように剥がれ落ちた

Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.

桜の道に遊びに行くこともない

Without his life-long friend, 　

生涯の友達なしでは

Puff could not be brave.

パフは勇敢にはなれなかった

So puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave.

それで強い竜パフは悲しくそっと洞窟へ戻っていった

 魔法の竜パフと少年ジャッキーペーパーとの交流と別れを描く切ない歌は、PP&MのメンバーであるPeter Yarrowとその友人Lenny Liptonにより創作された。リプトンは、米国詩人オグデン・ナッシュによるポエム「 The Tale of Custard the Dragon」（気弱なペットのドラゴンが活躍する奇抜でほのぼのとした物語）に感銘を受け、ドラゴンを軸にすえた新たなストーリーの原案を書いた。友人のヤローが後にそれを目にして、独自の歌詞を加え、今日知られる『Puff, the magic dragon』として完成させた。以来多くの子供たちに愛唱されている。(Popular song.comより)
