毎日(まいにち)、毎日(まいにち)　

Every day, every day, we are

僕ら(ぼくら)は 鉄板(てっぱん)の　上(うえ)で　焼(や)かれて　

burned on the iron plate,

嫌(いや)になっちゃうよ　　

 and we get sick of it.

ある朝(あさ)　僕(ぼく)は　店(みせ)のおじさんと  けんかして　

One morning, I quarreled with the shop master

海(うみ)に　逃(に)げこんだのさ

 and escaped into the sea

 

初(はじ)めて泳(およ)いだ　海(うみ)の底(そこ)

For the first time, I swam across the seabed.

とっても　気持(きも)ちが 良(い)いもんだ              

  It was very refreshing

お腹(なか)の　あんこが　重(おも)いけど  

The bean paste in my belly was heavy,

海(うみ)は　広(ひろ)いぜ、心(こころ)が弾(はず)む

 but the sea was broad and my heart bounded

桃色(ももいろ)サンゴが　手(て)を振(ふ)って  

Pink corals waved their hands

僕(ぼく)の泳(およ)ぎを　眺(なが)めていたよ 

  and watched my swimming

 

毎日(まいにち)、毎日(まいにち)　楽(たの)しいこと ばかり

Every day, every day is full of joys

 難破船(なんぱせん)が　僕(ぼく)の住(す)み家(か)さ 

 A wrecked ship is my house

時々(ときどき)　サメに　いじめられるけど

Sometimes I am teased by sharks

そんなときゃ、 そうさ、 逃(に)げるのさ

 In that case, yes, I just swim away

 

一日(いちにち)　泳(およ)げば　腹ぺこさ  

I’m starving from swimming all day

目玉(めだま)も　くるくる　回(まわ)っちゃう 

 My eyes spin round and round/ I feel giddy

たまには　エビでも　食(く)わなけりゃ

I must eat a shrimp for a change

塩水(しおみず)ばかりじゃ　ふやけてしまう

I will get soggy from just drinking salt water

岩場(いわば)の陰(かげ)から　食(く)いつけば  

I snapped from behind a rock

それは　小(ちい)さな 釣(つ)り針(ばり)だった    

 and I found it was a little fishhook

 

どんなに　どんなに　もがいても

No matter how much I struggled

針(はり)が　喉(のど)から　取(と)れないよ  

the hook wouldn’t come off my throat

浜辺(はまべ)で　見知(みし)らぬ　おじさんが

At the beach, a strange uncle,

僕(ぼく)を　釣(つ)り上(あ)げ　びっくりしてた  

fishing me up, was surprised.

 

やっぱり、　僕(ぼく)は鯛(たい)焼(や)きさ

After all, I’m a taiyaki

すこし　焦(こ)げある　鯛(たい)焼(や)きさ   

a taiyaki with a little scorch

おじさん　唾(つば)を　飲(の)み込(こ)んで  

The uncle swallowed spittle

僕(ぼく)を　うまそうに　食(た)べたのさ

  and ate me deliciously

 

たい焼(や)：　魚型(さかながた)のケーキで、中(なか)に小豆(あずき)が入(はい)っている

 Taiyaki is a fish shaped pancake with sweet red bean paste inside.
