バグパイプは古くスコットランドでは、戦闘の際、仲間を鼓舞するため先頭の兵士が命を懸て演奏した。「バグパイプが呼んでいる」とは戦争に行くことも暗示している。戦死して帰還した兵士の鎮魂歌としても流される。
