夕(ゆう)ぐれの 雨(あめ)が降(ふ)る 矢(や)切(ぎ)りの渡(わた)し

In the evening rain at  Yagiri ferry

親(おや)のこころに そむいてまでも 

we two stood determined to live for love

even against the wish of our parents.

The north wind is howling around Yagiri ferry

噂(うわさ)かなしい 柴(しば)又(また) すてて   

Abandoning Shibamata where they sadly gossip about us

舟(ふね)に まかせる さだめです  

we are destined to leave ourselves to a ferry boat

 

「どこへ 行くのよ・・・」

‟Where are we going?”

「知(し)らぬ土地(と ち)だよ・・・」

‟To a strange land.”

揺(ゆ)れながら 艪(ろ)が咽(むせ)ぶ 矢(や)切り(ぎり)の渡し(わた)  

The Yagiri ferryboat rolls, with the oars sobbing

息(いき)を殺(ころ)して 身(み)を寄(よ)せながら   

Holding our breath, pressing ourselves together,

明日(あす)へ 漕(こ)ぎだす 別(わか)れです   

we say farewell and row out for tomorrow.

 

Yagiri ferry  locates at lower Edo River, between Shibamata City in Tokyo and

Ichikawa City in Chiba Prefecture.
